Boat
Parking and Storage
Due to a growing demand for the use of the Club's hard standing areas your committee are having to introduce some regulation to the issue, these briefly are: - Trailer Identification: Summer Trailer
Parking: Trailer-Day-Sailors & Motorboats without permanent parking on the pier head should store their trailers neatly on the hard standing behind the small car park whilst the boats are in use. Craning Out
and Winter Boat Parking: Application forms will be sent by email or postage to existing users in good time and are available on the download page of the club web site. Payment will continue to be made with membership renewal - in arrears. The committee will allocate the winter parking to make best use of the hard standing areas. Please note that once laid-up for the winter you may be blocked in by other boats. Third Party
Insurance: A copy will be retained for our records by the club secretary. A minimum of three million pounds third party insurance is required. (This is normally the standard third party cover on small boat/marine insurances). Club Member Steph Robertson who is participating in the 2010 Clipper Round the World Race A member of the Solway Yacht Club takes part in this year's Clipper Round The World Race. Stephanie Robertson whose mother Isabel lives in Kippford and late father Hamish of Saughtrees factory, joins the race on April 7th in San Francisco for the last two legs back to Hull arriving on 17th July. The 10 boats are crewed by amateurs from all walks of life with a professional skipper. About 40% this year are complete sailing novices and as the founder and Chairman of the event, Sir Robin Knox-Johnstone, continually reminds everyone, less people have sailed round the world than have climbed Everest. The crews undertake rigorous training courses to prepare them for sailing the identical 68ft racing boats which are sponsored by different cities and regions around the world (including "Edinburgh Inspiring Capital"). Stephanie will be sailing on the clipper "Uniquely Singapore" together with a vet, a taxi driver, a photographer, students, amongst others and they herald from the UK, Singapore, Canada, Germany, Oman, Australia and, of course, Kippford. It is two years since Stephanie, in her 50s, made the decision to take a career break and make this trip of a lifetime. No doubt her childhood sailing in Kippford will hold her in good stead as the journey takes her down to and through the Panama Canal; onto Jamaica, New York, Nova Scotia; across the North Atlantic to Kinsale; up through the English Channel for a brief stop in the Netherlands and the last short race across the North Sea back to Hull. The competitive element cannot be underestimated but the life changing experience is much more than that. The crews work as a team on the various "watches" which, of course, have to include the "mother watch" taking it in turns to cook and clean the very cramped quarters for the 19 or so crew. Illness and mishaps have to be contended with and this year has already had its challenges including a man over board, a collision at the start of race 3 in Cape Town damaging both boats and a clipper grounded on a reef south of Singapore. All this can be followed on www.clipperroundtheworld.com Most importantly for Stephanie, this adventure has given her the opportunity to raise money for 2 charities close to her heart - The Maggie's Cancer Carers Centres and Alzheimer's Scotland. She has set up a website with all the details of her trip and fund raising as well as links to the clipper website where you can follow the race and read the daily news and diaries from crew. Please do take this opportunity to add to the £3,700 Stephanie has already raised by going to www.stephrobertson.co.uk where there is a sponsorship page. |

We see our Cadets at the Club and then they go off to University and are not around as much. We often wonder if they are still enjoying their sailing using the skills they learned on the Solway at Kippford?
Well here is George Clarks sailing story, he has made quite a mark, one he is rightly proud of; and one which Club Officers who helped him along the way, should also be proud.
