REVISION OF SYC CRUISER RACING HANDICAP YARDSTICKS

1. Because the Club's cruiser fleet now contains few of the types/makes of yacht covered in the RYA's current list of Portsmouth Yardstick numbers, it has been decided to use, for our own future races, SYC Yardsticks (SYCY) calculated from each individual yacht¡¦s performance in SYC races. The present RYA formula for calculating Corrected Time from Elapsed Time will remain unaltered except that a SYC Yardstick number will replace a PY number. However, the maximum yardstick that will be available to competitors will be 1600.

2. The first list of SYC Yardsticks will be based on data from this year¡¦s Kippford Week and will subsequently be revised annually based on a yacht¡¦s actual performance in SYC races. Yachts competing for the first time in SYC races will be given a Provisional SYC Yardstick by the Sailing Committee until they have completed sufficient races (normally 4) for a SYC Yardstick to be calculated. If the 4th race is completed during a Series, e.g. Kippford Week, the SYC Yardstick will be calculated at the end of the Series. SYC Yardsticks will not be changed during a series except in exceptional circumstances determined by the Sailing Committee

3. After a yacht has been given a SYC Cruiser Yardstick, the Sailing Secretary must be informed of any changes which could affect the boat's performance:-

(a) New sails
(b) Additional or fewer, larger or smaller, sails eg headsails, spinnakers, cruising chutes.
(c) Changes to engine /prop configuration eg change of prop type, position of outboard when racing etc.
(d)Change of normal helmsman for a race or series of races

4. REMINDER. To qualify as a Cruiser for SYC racing, a yacht must be fitted with a pulpit and lifelines and bilge pump, and carry a suitable anchor with chain or warp, a life ring preferably with dan-buoy, light and whistle, a compass, a serviceable VHF radio which may be handheld, a first-aid kit and distress flares. Each yacht must carry sufficient life jackets and safety harnesses for each crew member. Each yacht¡¦s internal accommodation must include a minimum of two fitted bunks, a fitted cooker and a sea/chemical toilet or fitted bucket. Additionally for offshore races, a life raft or inflatable dinghy, a radar reflector and fitted navigation lights must be carried.

5. Please contact me if you have any queries

CIC Kippford-Maryport-Kippford - 04/06/2011

Report by Jim Holland

Photograph Movie

Five cruisers set out in the strong NE blow on Saturday noon. Aries, Border Legend, Jolly Roger, Phoenix, Sirocis. The Solway was quite lumpy and some of us non-pilot house folks got quite wet with flying spray! The crossing was fast and exciting, just how sailing should be! The fleet split into two with Phoenix, Aries and Jolly Roger going well north of the wind farm and Border Legend and Sirocis preferring a more southerly route in deeper, smoother(!) water. As we neared Maryport, it became clear with the strong blow and tide against them, Sirocis were going to struggle to get in, in time and they took the decision to divert to Workington. The four remaining boats pressed on into Maryport braving 'the washing machine', as my kids have dubbed it, being the area of very angry water just at the mouth of Maryport harbour. This super choppy areas being caused by the almost onshore wind, plus strong tidal stream reflecting waves off the south pier and causing one heck of an interference pattern in just the wrong place! Steve and Jayne (Phoenix) and Nigel and Cheryl were already alongside when we (Jim, Zak & Imo) arrived and they helped us tie up. Shortly afterwards Tony and Dave (Aries) came in having slowed down in case Sirocis needed assistance (which they didn't thankfully).

We were all safely along side by 1545. Me any my soggy crew (Zak & Imo) headed straight for the laundry to dry our wet gear as we had all packed for a sunny, dry crossing!! We also discovered that the sea gate is yet again unserviceable with the marina on 'free flow'. Later that evening we reconvened at 'The Lifeboat' pub having met the crew of Sirocis who had waded through mud to get ashore in Workington!. Food was very good and huge, beer was good and cheap (Dishwatter 99p/pint!! and very drinkable).

After a good night's sleep, me and my crew headed to the aquarium on the harbour and were most impressed! If you ever find yourself with time to kill in Maryport, we can recommend this attraction. The big, shallow pool full of dogfish, manta rays and other fish is superb!

The four strong fleet headed out into favourable winds and calmer waters (at least at first!) at 1230 when there was enough water over the cill. Again, Phoenix and Jolly Roger stayed well north of Robin Rigg whilst Border Legend and Aries preferred a more southerly track. Again we had more wind than forecast and the sea was lumpy, particularly in the shallows mid Solway - perhaps the more southerly track was advisable. The stiff breeze meant we sped back arriving HW+0.5.

DSC Radios - Message from Jim Holland - Cruising Secretary

I'm sure you are already aware of the CG66 programme operated by the MCA and have registered already

If you have a DSC radio, here is where you connect your MMSI number to 'the real world' of search and rescue. Should the worst happen and all you can do is 'hit the red button', assuming you have completed CG66
then SAR services will know exactly what to look for!

I strongly recommend completing CG66 if you have not already done so!

Robin Rigg Windfarm

Cruising Secretary Jim Holland has a prepared information regarding navigation and exclusion zones around the Robin Rigg Windfarm, for information of members.

Working from the published legislation he has converted the given OS Easting and Northing co-ordinates to WGS84 datum GPS waypoints and plotted them to check sanity.

Please use this information for reference but please double check and plot for yourself before using for navigation.

The Robin Rigg Development team have also published information concerning progress of the project, contacts etc.
